That was hands down best 12 minutes of my day. My grandparents and great-grandparents were built of similar no-nonsense stock and I consider it an honor to be descended from that. My great-grandmother on my mother’s side was from Eastern Europe—but not as far to the east as your father!—She was from Brno (formerly Brünn) in Moravia and grew up with Kurt Gödel, who famously created a mathematical proof that prooved that mathematical proofs can’t be proven. 😀 Thank you for sharing this amazing story. The fact that you were able to show it to him before he passed had me sobbing.

Also, Daniel, the transcript should say "Aaron" at the end not "Erin" and this: “Losing” first appeared in Jewish Currents and then as a memoir essay in my collection of short stories The Woman Who Never Cooked. Thanks so for subscribing to my newsletter and I so hope we connect there as well. I hopped over to yours and gave you a comment and a "like" --cute piece!~Mary

Beautiful, I reminded me of the old folks I knew . Who lived through the hard years of the depression. My mother who got her older brother in trouble with her papa by asking him to make peanut brittle with the precious sugar that was rationed then . Of my father who got 50cents from his dad to go the the movies. Keep the change his dad told him . My dads old man earned it by hauling 100 pound grain bags on his shoulders .
