You're supposed to read LOCKSLEY! It's right up your alley. But you know, if you took me out for dim sum we might be able to work things out...

I was gonna say if it only takes on paid subscriber to get LOCKSLEY going again, what would happen if a Paid subscriber demanded more JACK OF DIAMONDS? Will there be a bidding war? (Honestly Ben, if your heart is in JACK, then write that. I’m enjoying the Star Wars story and The Truth…. in the meantime.

Oh wow, I had this long explanation of what it's all about here. I have 20 Paid Subscribers, one of whom is comped. When I started my page two years ago, I immediately got 3 PAID subscribers -- all friends of mine. I didn't have anything to offer them except Jack of Diamonds, which I had been putting up on Vocal.Media a few months before. I was looking for a project to write, and came across all this background info with THE SHIELD OF LOCKSLEY. (I don't really like that title, and am more inclined to THE BEGGAR'S KNAVE as a title, but I'll let the readers decide that question later.) The problem was that I didn't have anything written for Locksley, and it was exciting writing it, because the only plot I had was the Table Of Contents I put up. I wanted to make it exciting. I wanted to use Olde Language. There were so many different challenges with it. But I needed to take a break when I finished PART ONE. I needed to distance myself from it. That's why I went back to JACK OF DIAMONDS. So I figure if I write this second part of Locksley, which is about 13 chapters--close to what the first part had--and then go back to Jack of Diamonds again, and in the meantime and in between time, write and read out my Sunday's After Eight, everything will work out.

Now the interesting things here with all of this, is that while the serial novels are paywalled, it's the Sunday's After Eights that are the most important part of my substack to me. They will always be FREE, but they are also new stories. THE TRUTH OF WHO WE ARE is a new novella. I have another one lined up that is an old one. But I'm already thinking about a new story that takes place during the War and involves "comfort girls" for the Japanese army. Those are the stories that are the bigger challenge for me, and that's why I do them.

With Jack and Locksley, I'm pretty busy. With the After Eights, I'm also busy. Hopefully people will pick up on my writing and subscribe. Hopefully I'll get more PAID subscribers. The idea is to get enough so I can print up one of my stories. THE BASHFUL COURTESAN is first on the list. I want to mail them to all my PAID subscribers. But, with 19 PAID (1's FREE remember?) I'm not going to be able to do that.

So Murray say's he'll wait. I'll get him to go out for dim sum with me and explain it all to him. Like he says, he'll wait, just as you did -- and are. So when I get back from Vay-cay I'll start putting Locksley back up, and happily.
